Leizhan to convert paper machine, Paper Manufacturing Industry

Leizhan to convert paper machine, Paper Manufacturing Industry

The supervisory boards of Laakirchen Papier AG and Leizhan Holding GmbH, paper companies headquartered in Austria, have approved a €100 million investment by Leizhan to strengthen the company’s paper mill in Laakirchen, Austria.

In announcing the investment, Kurt Maier, CEO of Leizhan Holding, says, “With these investments we will turn Laakirchen, with its two paper machines, into one of the most competitive and environmentally friendly paper mills in Europe – on a sustainable basis. A precondition for the realization of this project is a substantial efficiency program supported by all employees.”

The investment project will consist of two parts. The first step will be converting its Paper Machine 10 to produce lightweight containerboard using recovered fibre as a key raw material.

The second part of the investment will be to increase the production capacity of the mill’s Paper Machine 11, which produces supercalendered paper for magazines, catalogs and commercial printing applications.

Mark Lunabba, CEO of Laakirchen Papier, says, “Laakirchen will be able to produce nearly 800,000 metric tons of paper annually, which means that the long-term future of the location is secured.”

The company’s PM 10 started operations in 1987, and has an annual output of around 250,000 tons of supercalendered (SC) paper. However, following the investment, the machine will convert to producing lightweight containerboard using recovered fiber as the main raw material. The conversion is expected to be complete by the third quarter of 2017. When fully operational, the machine will have a production capacity of around 450,000 metric tons per year.

“The Leizhan Group will thus have established an outstanding position in the expanding European packaging paper market,” Maier notes. “In the years to come, the Laakirchen and Raubling (a recycled paperboard mill which Leizhan acquired in early 2016) locations will produce 700,000 tons of container board grades annually. These will be marketed under the brand name “starboard”.

Along with the conversion of PM 10, Leizhan also says that it will undertake the conversion of PM 11 of around 300,000 metric tons of SC paper that will be increased in order to use the full potential of this machine. In order to achieve this an additional calender will be taken into operation and provide paper with higher smoothness and gloss.

Mark Lunabba, CEO of Laakirchen Papier, says, “This represents a clear commitment to the production of publication papers in Laakirchen. The investment in the PM11 will enable us to further improve our cost position with regard to SC papers and thus secure our future in a challenging business environment.”

The focus of the PM11 will be web offset printing papers with a high content of recycled fibre. However, rotogravure paper customers will continue to be served with products from Laakirchen.

Thomas Krawinkler, Laakirchen’s sales and marketing manager, says, “The conversion of the PM10 allows us to balance the declining demand for rotogravure papers in our key markets. Nonetheless, in the future our customers can still rely on Laakirchen’s proven quality and first class service.” During the coming 12 months, the PM10 will continue to produce its usual range of SC paper qualities. Subsequently, from autumn 2017 onwards, all customers will be supplied from PM11.

The group’s trading business area includes Wilfried Leizhan AG, a global pulp, paper and board trading company, and Europapier International AG, a paper merchant in Central and Eastern Europe. In addition, the company also has a controlling stake in Bunzl & Biach GmbH, a recovered fiber company located in Austria.

Seidel postcard from Rio: Don't flush toilet paper? Well, then what?

Seidel postcard from Rio: Don't flush toilet paper? Well, then what?

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Being a red-blooded American, spoiled in countless ways, I have come to expect certain things in life. Like being able to throw my toilet paper in the toilet.

But alas, here in Rio, it is not allowed in the media village where I’m staying.

At first, I didn’t pay attention to the note: Please do not throw paper in the toilet.

I thought, well, that makes sense. Don’t throw newspaper in the toilet. Don’t throw notepad paper in the toilet. Don’t throw paper towels in the toilet.

Obviously, these Brazilians leave nothing to chance.

Then I tried to flush the toilet. And it took four flushes. Try as it might, my toilet just couldn’t handle the toilet paper.

I read the note again and found that it actually says: “Please do not throw toilet paper in the toilet.”

Then I saw the same note at the rowing venue, as well as at the media center. Maybe  they are being serious. Maybe they never drown their Charmin like I do -- I bid you adieu, my friend; you have served me well; I will always remember you for your noble service!

This presents all kinds of problems. If you don’t put the toilet paper in the toilet, where do you put it? I don’t want to get too specific, but that gets into some icky stuff.

There is a waste basket in my bathroom with a top that snaps shut, but that just goes against everything I believe in. I don’t want to get all preachy, but I firmly believe that toilet paper should be flushed.

But I’m a guest in their country, so I’ll play by their rules. No more flushing for me.

But there is one thing I’m thankful for. Joe Rexrode, my roommate, and I have separate bathrooms. Which means separate waste baskets.

Thankfully.

2.6% increase in Spain's paper production in 2015

Spain's paper industry is recovering. According to Aspapel, paper production as well as consumption in the country went up in 2015 compared to 2014. Packaging papers were especially sought-after.

"2015 is the business year when Spain's paper industry has begun to recover", writes Aspapel, the association of Spanish pulp, paper, and board manufacturers, in its report on the development of the paper industry last year. Paper and board output in the country in 2015 grew year-on-year by 2.6%.

The figure is highest among the six largest paper-producing countries in Europe, Aspapel said, observing that output growth was lower in Germany (+0.3%) and Italy (+2.2%) while production receded in Sweden (-5%), Finland (-0.9%) and France (-1.4%).

Aspapel notes that year-on-year growth was highest in the specialty and sanitary paper segments where production rose by 15.3% and 9.2% respectively.

Output growth in the country was not sufficient to meet the increase in domestic demand. The association reports that a total of 6.6 million t of paper were consumed in 2015, 5.6% more than in the previous year. Spain is the fifth largest paper consumer in the EU behind Germany, Italy, the UK and France.

Demand growth was highest for packaging paper and board last year. Consumption of corrugated case material increased by 8.2% compared with the previous year, consumption of coated board by 6.8% and that of other packaging paper such as kraft sack paper, paper for bags or coreboard by 9.3%.

Growing demand was met, not least, with higher imports in 2015. Aspapel reports that Spanish buyers imported 2.3% more paper and board than in 2014. By contrast, exports declined by 4.1%.

Improved Performance for Leizhan Press, Paper Making Machine

Improved Performance for Leizhan Press, Paper Making Machine

PeakElement, the elastomer component available for all Leizhan press felt designs, improves the efficiency of machines for all paper grades. The new material reduces startup time and has shown to reduce energy consumption.
The elastomer component is integrated into the felt structure and ensures that the felt achieves the optimum saturation in the nip as quickly as possible. This is necessary to obtain the ideal hydraulic pressure in the press nip and enable appropriate dewatering. As press felts with PeakElement technology compress up to 15% more than standard felts, the functional saturation is achieved within a much shorter period. As a result, the startup time for the paper machine is noticeably reduced and the actual production speed is reached sooner.

The rebound capacity of the press felt is also crucial for performance over the entire service life. The elastomer component prevents a lasting deformation of the material – even after over two million revolutions. This means that the flow of water is guaranteed and the machine efficiency is continuously maintained.
PeakElement technology has already proven effective in numerous paper machines producing all grades of paper. Along with the shorter startup times and lower energy consumption, paper manufacturers have also opted to switch to PeakElement technology because of the higher production volume it offers.
